SMART Data Sprint 2021 debates the current state of the platform society “The Current State of Platformisation” | February 1 – 5, 2021

The fifth edition of SMART Data Sprint will receive Portuguese and foreign researchers to discuss the current state of the platformisation – a phenomenon that shows how digital platforms have been mediators of different structures of society, while (re) organizing and making our daily life increasingly dependent on their infrastructure. The event is organized by the research group SMART (Social Media Research Techniques), from iNOVA Media Lab (ICNOVA).

The week’s program will feature conferences by internationally recognised researchers, such as José van Dijck (Utrecht University), Anne Helmond (Amsterdam University and Digital Methods Initiative), Fernando van der Vlist (App Studies Initiative, and Digital Methods Initiative), and Ariadna Matamoros-Fernández (School of Communication at QUT and Digital Media Research Centre).

In an intense work for five days, participants will have the chance to attend lectures and presentations in addition to deepening knowledge in practical sessions, in English. In addition to these activities, experts and researchers invite participants to integrate projects and work on a specific problem.

As part of the Digital Media Winter Institute 2021, SMART Data Sprint is planned to happen in a hybrid format (online and/or in-person), respecting all security measures due to COVID-19.

Applications start on November 1 and close on January 18, 2021. The initiative also offers partial scholarships and all information is already available on the SMART research blog.
