UMass Dartmouth’s film series shines a spotlight on “Portuguese Cinema in Times of Dictatorship”

In the upcoming weeks, UMass Dartmouth’s Center for Portuguese Studies and Culture (CPSC) will be presenting seven Portuguese films in a weekly rhythm, inviting the public to see things in a different perspective and engage in candid conversations about one of the longest authoritarian regimes in 20th-century Europe, which was overthrown on April 25, 1974 by a military coup known as the Carnation Revolution.

The free film screenings will be guided by Dr. Maria do Carmo Piçarra, the Spring 2023 Hélio and Amélia Pedroso/Luso-American Development Foundation Endowed Chair in Portuguese Studies at UMass Dartmouth. She is a recognized leader in the field of Portuguese cinematography and has published multiple works on the subject of Portuguese cinematography during the Estado Novo.
